Area in Need of Redevelopment?

On November 22, 2022, the Holmdel Township Committee voted to ask the Holmdel Planning Board to investigate whether the former Nokia site (“Crawford Hill”) should be designated an “area in need of redevelopment”.

This property is also the site of the Horn Antenna which is important nationally and internationally for the role it played in confirming the “Big Bang” theory in the creation of the universe.  Bell Labs scientists Robert Wilson (a Holmdel resident) and Arno Penzias received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1978 for their discovery.

The Horn Antenna was later designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1989.

A real possible consequence of the Holmdel Township Committee action is that the Horn Antenna and the Crawford Hill property are endangered to become a high-density residential development.
